ANDRE DIETIKER

BUILDING HISTORY:

Andre finished school at 16 years old to begin his career as a tradesman. After struggling to find a start as a carpenter, the young school leaver’s persistence finally paid off. After enrolling in a practical TAFE course, Andre found a carpentry job with a neighbour where he gained experience in ‘the lot’ – brick laying, concreting, framing, plastering, wall/floor tiling and even electrical wires. The Housing Industry Association’s (HIA) training and apprenticeship scheme then helped him gain experience in a variety of fields by passing him to various contractors. He began with a city builder, gaining experience in commercial style building; followed by a timber frame carpenter and a larger development company building residential units, before winning apprentice of the year in his third year at HIA.

Andre spent the next few years in his early twenties, working with a builder on architecturally designed houses and was given the huge responsibility of having to direct and work to finish four houses in a very short time after his boss, and great friend passed away. After this period of working fourteen hour days, seven days per week to get the jobs done, he took some much needed time off before jumping back on the hard slog work trail and getting his builder’s certificate.

Andre’s proudest moment then came when he started his own company, ‘Insideout Construction’, with his father working as a landscaper under him. After a very challenging stint working as a foreman for a builder on some very high profile and wealthy estates around Sydney, he began working on his own company again, hiring four more contractors, doing renovations, bathrooms, deck pergolas and landscaping work. After fourteen years in the industry, Andre is still very enthusiastic about his work and believes working under pressure is still what he does best.

BEST PROJECT:

The most challenging project I have taken on is a 110 meter long x 2.5 meter high shock creted retaining wall. The wall was built on Iron rock ground which stopped us from having a strip footing. The Iron rock was unable to be penetrated.

JULIAN MCDONALD

WORK HISTORY:

Julian began his carpentry apprenticeship with Apprenticeships Victoria (a government run program that sub-contracts workers out to builders). He began work with an eccentric Dutch builder, who would shoot nails at his employees for laughs, which unsurprisingly caused Julian to seek work elsewhere. Julian then spent a few months travelling around Australian in a caravan with his girlfriend, before stopping for an extended stay in Port Douglas, after running out of funds.

He worked as a landscaper for eighteen months in the highly relaxed area, where he admits there was little to no work safety and he would turn up to the job in thongs! He fell in love with landscaping in Port Douglas, but returned to Melbourne where his girlfriend needed to finish her teaching degree.

Jules then worked for two years with a small builder in the area and finished his apprenticeship, however kept busy on the weekends doing freelance landscaping. Soon after finishing his apprenticeship, Jules started his own landscaping business which he runs to this day, while also picking up many other trades along the way.

BEST PROJECT:

Gutting and completely remodelling and renovating my unit. It started as an absolute dump and I have designed and created a complete renovation including tiling, painting, new doors, installing kitchen & laundry, removing walls, plastering, plumbing, concreting and creating a courtyard and outdoor area. Fitting it in around running my own business has been challenging but it has given me a huge sense of achievement and satisfaction and coming home every night to my place makes it all worth it.

MATHEW HEATH

Work history:

Matthew left school at age 17 to work in a fish factory, filleting fish, however ended up doing most of the maintenance and repairs for the business which was much more up his alley. Matt then began a carpentry apprenticeship with his father, which changed the family business somewhat since they had to find more building work to accommodate the skills Matt needed to acquire for the apprenticeship. Before this, the business was mainly repairs, painting, rendering, modifications for the disable and renovations.

After completing his apprenticeship, Matthew went to Alice Springs to work with his brother, Jarrod, in the construction/render/painting business, occasionally returning to Port Lincoln for work. Matthew then moved to Adelaide, where he met the love of his life, fiancée Chelsea, and set up his business ‘Heathy’s Rock Solid Construction’. Matthew was particularly proud, after his first ever apprentice, Mark Pierce became the HIA Carpentry Apprenticeship of the year in 2007. This year, Matt and his fiancée have moved to Port Lincoln to be part of a new family venture, building new homes throughout the Eyre Peninsula.

Best Project:

It was a renovation, inside and out, of a one hundred year old house in Adelaide and we ripped out all the interior ceilings and re framed them 500mm lower and gyped and flushed including solid cornice 125mm. We also replaced all the skirtings and architrave.

I AM OBSESSED WITH
I’m a little too laid back to get obsessed with much, but I do feel weird if I haven’t played my guitar in a while.

I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT…
Good music, close friends and laughter.

MY FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY…
We took a holiday to the Middle East when I was about 8 to visit my cousins. It was such a different world compared to my own. We got up to all sorts of shenanigans and just had a ball together.

I CHILL OUT BY…
Having a laugh with friends or dragging them out to various random activities – rock climbing, camping, frisbee, softball, tennis, lawn bowls – all of which usually end in laughter and perhaps a beer.

WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY…
Sunshine, fresh air, good food and my mates. Doesn’t really matter when or where.

IN TEN YEARS I WANT TO BE…
Smiling.

LOOKING BACK I WISH I HAD…
Learned to surf while I lived next to the beach for four years. It’s that much harder when you don’t live anywhere near the sea.

MY BIGGEST WEAKNESS IS…
Chocolate. If I start eating it I don’t stop. So I’ve had to ban myself from it altogether.

I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO…
Travel the world. I’ve started but I’ve still got a long way to go! Canada’s next on the list, ad I would definitely go back to Cambodia.

I AM CURRENTLY READING…
‘Holy Cow’ by Sarah McDonald. It’s hilarious! She has a fantastic way with words.

MY ATTITUDE TO LIFE IS …
Don’t waste it being anything less than happy. Get out there and discover what it is you enjoy doing and make that the focus, not the sideline.

IF I COULD CHANGE THE WORLD I WOULD…
Be very busy! There’s so much in need of change. It sounds cheesy but I actually believe we can all change it in our own ways. It’s all about our mindset. We’ve just got to get over ourselves and share the love (and the wealth) a bit more.

MY HERO IS…
Not sure I have a ‘hero’ as such. I guess someone I admire and whose work I really respect is Toni Collette.

MY FAVOURITE FOOD IS…
I’d like to say something more sophisticated but it’s got to be pizza. My local pizza restaurant does some amazing gourmet vegetarian pizzas. I go there far too often.

MY FAVOURITE MOVIE IS…
Always difficult to answer… It’s a toss-up between Spaceballs, Fargo, Dancer in the Dark and Muriel’s Wedding. A random selection, I know, and it will probably change if you ask me this question tomorrow.

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE…
Taller, and still having fun.

MY MUM ALWAYS SAID…
Amy, did you eat the last biscuit? As well as something about doing your best and learning to be happy with that.

MIKE BROADBY
